While strip-mall shopping centers are common in the Triangle area, nothing quite compares to the downtown experience. Cary's historical downtown area is a commercial center that has provided great services and delicious dining throughout the years. Find convenient service shops, then stay for lunch at the Serendipity Gourmet Deli (118 South Academy Street), the Once in a Blue Moon Bakery and Café (115-G West Chatham Street, bluemoonbakery.com), or try Saturday brunch at Cindy's House Café (140 E. Chatham Street). Don't miss the old-fashioned soda fountain at Ashworth Drugs (105 West Chatham Street, www.ashworthdrugs.com).
A quick drive from downtown, in Chatham Square, is Cary's Little India. Stock up on chutney at the Triangle Indian Market or Bollywood DVDs and CDs at Palika Bazaar, which also has an exotic selection of sarees, flowing skirts, bangle bracelets. Chatham Square offers a variety of dining venues- don't miss Cool Breeze for fresh dahi batata puri or lychee ice cream. For vegetarian fare, try Shree Udupi Café for some yummy samosas, dosai (crepes) and uthappam (pancakes). In addition to South Asian cusine, the square also has a tienda and a halal meat shop.
